Beginner-friendly spots near Aghroud

Imi Ouaddar beach

A long, open beach break with a sandy bottom, between Aghroud and Taghazout. It suits beginners and lower intermediates, and it is much quieter than the beaches in Taghazout. On bigger days the better peaks tend to show at the north end. The beach is exposed, so wind can spoil it quickly, sometimes by late morning: go early.

Desert Beach (K25)

The beach break at the end of Desert Point, the closest spot to Aghroud. The beach side suits all levels and works best around low tide. Like most spots north of Taghazout, it is usually uncrowded.

Tamri

Tamri is a wide, sandy beach break north of Cap Ghir, at the mouth of a river valley lined with banana plantations. It has several peaks with lefts and rights, and it is one of the most consistent spots in southern Morocco: when Taghazout is flat, Tamri often still has waves of around one metre.

On small days the inside sections are great for beginners. On bigger days the outside peaks are for experienced surfers, and strong currents can pull you along the beach, so keep an eye on your position. It works best on west to north swells, offshore winds from the east or south, and low to mid tide.

Imsouane Bay

Further north, Imsouane is worth a day trip. Its bay produces one of the longest rights in Morocco: rides of 150 to 300 metres over sand, sometimes more than two minutes long. It suits all levels and works best at low to mid tide; a big high tide can switch it off. Instead of paddling back, most surfers walk back up the beach to the peak.

Spots for intermediate and advanced surfers

Waves breaking on a rocky shore

Anchor Point (Taghazout)

Morocco’s most famous right-hand point. On a solid winter northwest swell it peels along the reef in long walls. It is best from low to mid tide, suits intermediate to advanced surfers, and is the most crowded spot in the area: respect the locals and the line-up.

Killer Point

A long right-hand point between Imi Ouaddar and Taghazout, sometimes with a short left. The take-off can shift, and strong currents make the paddle back hard on big days. Good for confident intermediates and experts, and a useful option when Anchor Point is packed.

Desert Point (K25)

The rocky point next to Aghroud. It handles a wide range of swell sizes and is usually uncrowded. The point is for intermediate and advanced surfers; beginners stay on Desert Beach next to it.

Boilers

A powerful right that breaks over reef just before the Cap Ghir lighthouse, north of Aghroud. On clean winter swells it can barrel. Advanced surfers only: sea urchins and sharp rocks make getting in and out tricky, so booties help.

Draculas

A fast right over a sharp reef near Boilers, with strong rips. It works at low tide on a proper groundswell. Advanced surfers only.

Season

When to surf around Aghroud

The northwest swell season runs from September to April. November to February brings the biggest waves and the busiest line-ups; October and March are often the sweet spot, with good swell and fewer people. Summer is smaller and windier, which suits beginners in the whitewater, and Tamri usually keeps some waves when the rest of the coast goes flat.
